Apple Picking, Fall Fairs & Foliage: The Northumberland Fall Bucket List
There's a particular quality to fall in Northumberland County that people who've experienced it never forget. It's the smell of apples and pressed cider on a cool morning. It's the light at 5pm through hardwood forest when everything has turned. It's a small-town fair that hasn't changed much in 175 years, where someone's grandmother has entered her pie and fully expects to win.
It's a region that earns autumn in a way that not every part of Ontario does. Northumberland County — stretching from the north shore of Lake Ontario inland through rolling hills and forested valleys — sits at roughly the right latitude and elevation to produce some of the province's most remarkable fall colour, typically peaking in early to mid-October. But the season here is about more than foliage. It's harvest country: apple orchards, farm markets, roadside stands stacked with squash and corn. It's festival country: a music festival on a goat farm, a heritage fair in a small town, a vintage film series in a proper old theatre.

Cultivate Festival | September 25–27, Port Hope
If you only make it to one fall event in Northumberland County this year, make it Cultivate.
Now in its 10th edition, the Cultivate Festival is a three-day celebration of Canadian music, art, food, and community taking place September 25–27, 2026, at Haute Goat Farm in Port Hope. Over 100 Canadian artists perform across multiple stages, and this year the festival has adopted a pay-what-you-can model to knock down barriers and promote accessibility and inclusion.
The festival features acclaimed singer-songwriter Terra Lightfoot, high-energy Montreal collective Lemon Bucket Orkestra, Afro-folk artist Ahmed Moneka, and more — alongside workshops, Indigenous programming, local food and drink, camping, and interactive community experiences. It's like a big picnic, a music festival, a block party, and a playground for all ages — a weekend of feeling fully connected to the things that matter most, set at the magical Haute Goat Farm.
Port Hope is approximately 20 minutes from Whispering Springs, making the retreat an ideal base for the weekend — you get the festival by day and 200 acres of old-growth forest to come home to at night.
Warkworth Fall Fair | September 13–14, Warkworth
One of Northumberland County's oldest and most beloved traditions, the Warkworth Fall Fair has been running since 1850 and shows no signs of losing its appeal. The 174th Warkworth Fall Fair runs September 13–14, 2026, at the Warkworth Fairgrounds — a small town country fair with something for everyone, featuring 4-H and beef shows, horse shows, a firemen's challenge, talent show, home craft and crop exhibits, a pie contest and auction, a baby show, truck and tractor pull, a petting zoo, beer garden, and more.
This is the real thing — not a curated heritage experience, but an actual agricultural fair of the kind that used to happen in every county in Ontario and increasingly doesn't. The pie auction alone is worth the drive. Daily admission is $10 or $25 for the weekend, with school-age children free all weekend.
Warkworth is about 35 minutes north of Whispering Springs through some of the county's prettiest countryside.
Camp Moonlight Fundraiser | September 18th
On September 18th, Whispering Springs is hosting
An Evening Under the Moon — a fundraiser dinner with food and live music in support of
Camp Moonlight, a fully hosted glamping retreat for families raising children with disabilities or complex medical needs.
Camp Moonlight is one of the most meaningful things Whispering Springs does. The entire retreat is donated by the property — funds raised cover staffing, accessibility, care, meals, and programming so that families never receive a bill and never feel like a burden. For many of these families, it's the first real getaway they've had since their child's diagnosis.
On September 18th, an evening on the property — good food, live music, open air, old-growth forest — is also an act of community. Tickets and donations are available at the link below.
Apple Picking — Colborne & Cobourg
Northumberland County sits along what locals call the Apple Route — a stretch of Highway 2 between Port Hope and Trenton that passes through some of the province's most productive apple-growing country. Fall, naturally, is when it earns its name.
Pieter's Appleyard, Colborne: Pieter's Appleyard is a pick-your-own apple orchard located in beautiful Colborne, Ontario, along the Apple Route in Northumberland County — just over an hour's drive from Toronto. They open daily through September and October, and the orchard sits on a hillside with views that justify the visit even before you've touched an apple. Colborne is about 10 minutes east of Whispering Springs.
Moore Orchards, Cobourg: Moore Orchards is an award-winning, family-owned fruit farm near Cobourg growing apples, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and pears — with freshly pressed cider made from their own hand-picked apples on site, as well as homemade pies and preserves. A local institution, and about 25 minutes from the property.
Both orchards are at their best from mid-September through October. Call ahead to confirm pick-your-own availability on any given weekend.
Fall Foliage Drives
Northumberland County's hardwood forest — a mix of maple, oak, birch, and beech across rolling hills — produces fall colour that rivals anything in the province. The peak window is typically the first two weeks of October, though the precise timing shifts year to year depending on temperature and rainfall.
Best routes from Whispering Springs:
The Apple Route (County Road 2 East toward Colborne and Brighton) — gentle rolling farmland, heritage architecture, apple orchards opening their gates. Stop at Pieter's Appleyard in Colborne and continue east to Brighton's marsh if the light is right.
North toward Warkworth (County Road 25) — the road climbs from the lake plain into the hills, and the forest closes in on both sides. The village of Warkworth itself is one of the county's most photogenic destinations — a main street that time has been kind to, with galleries, bakeries, and the kind of independent bookshop that makes you want to cancel your afternoon.
Rice Lake Road north from Grafton — the lake appears at the end of a descent through forest, and the colour reflected on the water on a clear October morning is the kind of thing photographers drive hours to find.

Based at Whispering Springs: The Perfect Fall Home Base
Everything on this list is within 45 minutes of Whispering Springs at 141 Mercer Lane, Grafton. The retreat sits on 200 acres of old-growth forest in the heart of Northumberland County, and in fall — when the 200 acres turn — the property itself becomes one of the better reasons to stay in the region.
