Inside Ontario's Most Sustainable Wedding and Glamping Destination
Most wedding venues rent out a space. Whispering Springs Wilderness Retreat is trying to protect one.
When John and Nancy Corcoran founded Whispering Springs in 2015, they weren't thinking about event packages or weekend bookings. They were thinking about the land.
The couple had previously worked in hospitality and operated Bahamian sailing charters. Their goal was to build something different in Ontario – a sustainable wedding venue and glamping destination that worked alongside nature rather than over it.
The result, set across 200 acres of rolling Northumberland County hills 90 minutes east of Toronto, became one of Canada's first luxury glamping retreats. But what sets it apart isn't just the safari tents, the forest chapel, or the wide range of unique amenities.
Above all, it's the philosophy.
It Started With the (Whispering) Spring
At the heart of the property is a natural spring – one of the purest water sources in all of Eastern Canada.
That spring fills the ponds, nourishes the land, and runs through everything it offers, from weddings to wellness retreats to everyday guest experiences.
The entire layout of Whispering Springs was designed around protecting it. Infrastructure was deliberately positioned to preserve the water source and shield the surrounding landscape and wildlife from disruption. That single decision shaped everything that followed: where tents were placed, where trails were cut, where guests could go, and more.
The goal has always been to protect and preserve this corner of Northumberland County while offering a truly luxurious, nature-immersive experience
It's an unusual way to plan a hospitality business. Most venues start with the experience and build around it. In this case, Whispering Springs started with the land and let that set the terms.
9,000 Trees and Counting
In 2024, Whispering Springs planted over 9,000 native trees across the property as part of Forest Canada's 2 Billion Trees Program, a national reforestation initiative aimed at combating climate change.
The trees restore natural habitats, improve soil health, and sequester carbon. The planting has no plans to stop, as thousands more are scheduled each year, with the long-term goal of transforming the estate into a thriving wildlife corridor and living carbon sink.
That's not a marketing initiative. It's a decade-long commitment to a forest that will take generations to fully mature. The people planting those trees won't see them at their tallest, which says something real about what this place and its identity is built on.
The Wildlife Isn't Staged
The property is home to deer, foxes, owls, wild turkeys, otters, and countless migratory birds.
The wildlife moves through old-growth forests, wetlands, and open meadows that have been carefully preserved alongside the guest experience, not cleared to make room for it.
Guests spot them on morning walks, from their tent and cabin porches, and at the edge of the meadow at dusk. None of it is arranged. The tented accommodations are designed to sit lightly on the land rather than impose on it. The trails, the gathering spaces, and the wedding areas were all positioned to leave the ecosystem intact while giving guests real access to enjoy it.
Luxury With a Light Footprint
Sustainability at Whispering Springs goes even further.
The retreat grows herbs and ingredients on-site for cocktails and meals at The Watering Hole Guest Bar & Lounge, has eliminated single-use plastics, runs on-demand hot water systems, and maintains active recycling and composting programs throughout the property.
Meanwhile, the glamping accommodations feature king beds, soaker tubs, private washrooms, and electric fireplaces. Couples get married under a cathedral of cedars and pines. And guests have access to a saltwater pool, hot tubs, a cedar barrel sauna, and other areas to truly unwind.
Ultimately, the comforts and the conservation go hand-in-hand.
Why It Matters for Guests
For glamping guests and couples choosing a sustainable wedding venue in Ontario, the land itself matters more than most people initially realize.
A venue that has spent years protecting its land looks different from one that hasn't. The forest at Whispering Springs is older and denser because it's been cared for. The water is cleaner. The wildlife is present. The quiet that guests notice when they arrive isn't accidental; it's the result of choices made deliberately over a long time.
When you glamp or get married at Whispering Springs, you're not just booking a setting. You're stepping into a place that exists because of deep respect for the land and a commitment to providing an unforgettable, restorative escape.
Whether you're planning a wedding, a glamping getaway, or a corporate retreat near Toronto, that's what you're booking when you come to Whispering Springs.
