Mini Safari Package

Our Mini Safari Tents are the perfect option for those who are on a slimmer budget. These boho-inspired accommodations feature queen-beds & electricity, as well as shared washroom and kitchen facilities with your girls. These tents also have a shared campfire and outdoor dining area, and are perfect for group glamping getaways. The Mini Safari Pacakge includes 3 tents in either our Waterview or Forest Canopy location.

Treetop Tent Package

Our Treetop Tent Pacakge is perfect for the ultimate Bachelorette getaway. Three stunning Treetop Tents are connected by suspension bridges to a hot tub amongst the forest canopy. Our newest Safari Tent: Scuttlebutt

This year we are excited to introduce our newest Safari Tent at Whispering Springs: Scuttlebutt. Inspired by Red Fisher, the iconic fisherman and renowned conservationist, this tent is an homage to the great outdoors.

BH “Red” Fisher

Bernard Herbert "Red" Fisher (February 18, 1914 – May 5, 2006) was a popular radio and television personality in Canada . He hosted the first fishing show to ever air on television, The Red Fisher Show'. The show took place at the famous "Scuttlebutt Lodge" and featured silent home movies of outdoors activities, often involving fishing, which involved high-profile guests, mainly from the major league sports of the era. Such guests included ice hockey stars Gordie Howe , Eddie Shack , and Johnny Bower , and baseball players Ted Williams , Roger Maris and Ferguson Jenkins .

The Red Fisher Show differed from other outdoor living shows of its time by promoting nature conservation , game preservation and the " catch and release " mentality. The series continued until 1989, making it among the longest-running on CTV . The series was an inspiration for the comedy television series The Red Green Show .

Fisher was inducted into the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame in 1988. In 2000, he released a collection of stories and anecdotes from his life called Tight Lines and Tall Tales. A portion of the profits was donated to outdoor conservation efforts.

Fisher died in Chatham, Ontario at the age of 92.

What makes Scuttlebutt unique?

Like our other Safari Tents, Scuttlebutt features a queen-size bed, electricity and in-tent washroom. The interior of the tent is inspired by the original Scuttlebutt Lodge, and features a rustic log frame bed, writer’s desk, antique fishing tackle, and even a few of Red’s possessions. Guests staying in Scuttlebutt will also have complimentary use of fishing rods and tackle so that they can fish in our spring-fed pond which has been stocked with bass and trout. The tent is situated in a charming and secluded forested area that is a close walking distance to the trails and central amenities of Whispering Springs.

How to Make Campfire Apple Crisp

Looking for an easy and seasonal dessert to whip up on your glamping getaway? Apple crisp is one of our favourite autumnal desserts at the springs and is easy to prepare and cook over the BBQ. Whispering Springs is also located in the heart of apple country, so there are lots of nearby orchards to visit and load up on home-grown and delicious Ontario apples (as well as snap that perfect instagram-worthy apple picking picture!).

What you’ll need:

Cast iron pan ( Woods has a great selection and can be found at Canadian Tire stores nationwide)
Gluten-free oats (approx 1 cup)
Generous helping of maple syrup
2-3 Ontario apples
1 tablespoon of coconut oil
Ground cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves

Instructions:

Either heat up the grill or start stoking your fire to get the flames a blazin’
Lightly oil your cast iron skillet with coconut oil
Cut apples into thin slices
Cover the bottom of the cast iron skillet with sliced apples
Add a layer of oats ontop of the apples
Sprinkle on ground cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves
Drizzle with maple syrup
Let cook on the grill or campfire for approximately 10-15 minutes or until the oats start to turn a golden brown and apples begin to tender
We suggest serving with a generous scoop of Kawartha Dairy vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!

Fall is officially here, which means that along with stunning fall foliage and pumpkin spice lattes, we are also privy to chilly mornings and even chillier evenings. While this may not be a problem for the average person, it poses a bit of a challenge for the camper (or glamper) who wants to spend time in the wilderness during autumn. While your tent is outfitted with an electric heater to keep you toasty in the evenings and a soaker tub to take the chill off, here a few things we suggest to bring along on your fall glamping getaway. Also, when you arrive at Whispering Springs Wilderness Retreat stop by The Watering Hole. The onesie

Oh the onsie. While it’s hard not to feel slightly foolish in the endearing onsie (or like a 2 year-old), nothing beats it for warmth and comfort on those chilly fall evenings. While we plan on selling our very onsies at Whispering Springs in the future, for now you’ll have to bring your own, butt-flap and all.

Warm socks & slippers

Warm socks and slippers are key fall glamping essentials. Mornings in the great outdoors can be brisk, and the easiest way to prevent the chills is to keep those toes warm and toasty the minute you step out of bed. We suggest wrapping yourself in one of our plush robes, throwing on some cozy slippers and enjoying your morning coffee on you private porch as you watch the forest come to life.

Scarves, hat & mitts

Fall is the season of scarves for a reason – not only do they jazz up any outfit, but they also help keep you warm and comfortable during your fall hikes and outings. Pair it with matching hat and mitts and you’ll be glamour camping ready.

Your favourite fall treats

Fall is all about those creature comfort foods. Whether it’s hot chocolate warmed up over an open fire, a piece of world-famous apple pie from the local Big Apple, or a s’more kit purchased from The Watering Hole Guest Lounge & Bar, stock up on your favourite goodies for your glamping getaway and visit some of the local markets, cafes and orchards in Northumberland County.

How to Make Campfire Nachos

There’s something special about making your meals in the great outdoors. Whether it’s the novelty of using an outdoor grill & improvising with ingredients, or enjoying the fruits of your labours surrounded by the wilderness and beneath the open sky - it is an incomparable experience. One of our favourite campfire snacks at the Springs are Campfire Nachos. They are easy to cook and prepare and make a great snack to enjoy around the campfire on a warm summer evening. We suggest stopping by one of our local food markets on your way to the Springs to make sure you have everything you need to make this tasty snack on your glamping getaway.

What you’ll need:

Cast iron pan ( Woods has a great selection and can be found at Canadian Tire stores nationwide)
Nacho chips
Shredded cheese
Beans of choice
Diced veggies (we recommend jalapeños, onions and bell peppers)
Fresh cilantro
Meat of your choice (barbecue chicken, grilled steak or ground beef are all great options!)
Salsa and guacamole

Instructions:

Either heat up the grill or start stoking your fire to get the flames a blazin’.
We suggest cooking the meat of your choice on the barbecue thoroughly prior to cooking your nachos.
Lightly oil the cast iron skillet.
Combine ingredients in your cast iron skillet. Start with a layer of nacho chips and add shredded cheese, veggies and cooked meat. Once the first layer is complete then repeat (we think all nachos should be 2-3 layers deep!).
Cover with tinfoil (or a lid if you have one) and place on the grill or over a fire pit.
Let cook on the grill or campfire for approximately 10 minutes or until the cheese has melted and veggies are heated.
Enjoy!

How to Build a Campfire

Whether it’s your first time glamping or you’re a seasoned camper, one of the trickiest aspects of the outdoor wilderness experience is getting the campfire a blazin’. By far the most common question we receive from our guests is “how do I build a campfire?”. Here are a few helpful tips & tricks to get your campfire aglow and impress your friends (or that special someone) on your next glamping getaway!

Along with your firelogs (which are provided free of charge at Whispering Springs), you’ll also want to make sure you have some kindling and tinder or fire starter. Here is the difference between the three:

Tinder: Tinder is the smallest of the three and consists of materials that burn fast and easily. Small twigs, dry leaves and needles make great tinder, however there is no shame in stopping by The Watering Hole to stock up on our Fire Starter sets which consist of dried bug-repellant herbs, pinecones and fire starter.
Kindling: Kindling consists of twigs and branches that burn slightly slower than tinder and will help to ignite the firewood. Paper and cardboard also work well as kindling. The sticks and twigs are generally less than one inch around and serve as the medium that helps transport the flame from the highly flammable tinder to the larger fire logs.
Firewood: Firewood is slow to burn and is what will give your fire life and longevity throughout the evening. Ideally you’ll wan to ensure that your firewood is dry and is not cut too large.

You’ll generally find that there are two schools of thought when it come to the best way to build a campfire:

Teepee Method

The most common method of building a campfire is the teepee method. In the teepee method you will want to congregate your tinder fire starter in the centre and surround this with your dry kindling. Once this is complete, place your fire logs around the tinder & kindling in a teepee fashion, leaving enough space to ensure air flow through the structure. Once you have created your teepee use a lighter or match to set the kindling ablaze and watch your campfire come to life. This campfire style is quick & easy to construct and is great for the glamping newbie.

Log Cabin Method

The log cabin (or cross cross) method of building a campfire is slightly more complex and involves stacking your firewood to create a box-like structure around the tinder and kindling. Start by placing two logs in your pit parallel to each other, then stack two more on top perpendicular to them. At this point you will want to place the tinder and kindling in the centre and then continue to stack logs to your desired height. When you are ready, ignite the tinder and continue adding kindling to the centre until your logs catch fire. Voila, you’ve got yourself a campfire!

Our campfire building experts at the Springs like to create a hybrid of these two methods, with a log cabin base and a teepee top. Once you have the basics down feel free to get creative and invent your very own campfire method that works best for you. Happy glamping!

We suggest you and your partner start your day with an invigorating yoga session at our lodge-inspired pavilion taught by our talented yoga instructor, followed by a relaxing hike through our stunning forest trails. Explore our stunning old-growth forest, unique prairie-savanna ecosystem and breath taking Forest Chapel. Yoga sessions can be reserved online when booking your tent or you can inquire for availability upon check-in.

Prince Edward County Wine Tour

Whispering Springs is located just 40 minutes west of Prince Edward County , which is brimming with amazing wineries, breweries, restaurants and beaches. It’s the perfect place for a romantic afternoon adventure. Stop by The Grange and purchase a picnic basket to enjoy on their grounds with their masterful wine or try some delicious wood-fired pizza and refreshing wine at Three Dog Winery. A few of our other favourite spots include Casa Dea Winery , Sandbanks Provincial Park and The County Cider Company. For dinner, you can’t go wrong with the Drake Devonshire where you’ll enjoy stunning views of Lake Ontario while sampling delicious food and the best cocktails the county has to offer.

Once you return from your adventure in the county we suggest ending your day with a romantic campfire at your Safari Tent (all of our Safari Tents have their own campfires and are fully stocked with firewood). How to Make Gourmet S'mores

It’s hard to think of a more enjoyable way to spend a summer’s eve than sitting around a campfire with friends, making s’mores and enjoying the outdoors. We’re all familiar with traditional s'mores, that delicious combination of graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows that instantly brings back memories of childhood and summer camp. This summer, get a little fancy at the campfire and impress your friends and fellow campers with these easy, creative and delicious gourmet s’more recipes:

Strawberries & white chocolate s'more

Not only does this s’more look extra pretty, but it tastes absolutely delicious. Use traditional graham crackers and marshmallows, but replace milk chocolate with a light white chocolate. Add in some sliced strawberries and voila, you’ve got yourself a gourmet s’more.

Peanut butter & banana s'more

You’d be hard pressed to find someone who wasn’t a fan of a good ‘ol peanut butter & banana sandwich, so we’re confident this will be a hit at your next bonfire. Simple smear peanut butter on your graham cracker, and add in some sliced bananas in addition to the marshmallows and chocolate.

Chocolate chip cookie s'more

For an extra tasty treat, try replacing graham crackers with chocolate chip cookies the next time you are making s’mores at the campfire. The heat from the marshmallow will help warm the cookies, making it seem as though they are fresh from the oven!

Mexican chocolate s’more

Add some spice to your campfire with the cinnamon chocolate s’more. Simply sprinkle cinnamon and chili powder on dark chocolate before combining it with marshmallows and graham crackers to give your s’more an extra tasty kick.

Chocolate mint s’more

Few food combinations are more complimentary than chocolate and mint. Replace the traditional milk chocolate with your favourite chocolate mint treat - and if possible use chocolate graham crackers. Enjoy!

What to Bring Glamping this Summer

At Whispering Springs Wilderness Retreat, we have done our best to preserve the essence of the quintessential camping experience - nights beneath the stars, exchanging stories and roasting marshmallows around the campfire, and waking up to the sounds of the forest in the morning. What we have tried to do is remove the comforts that are often inherent, and for many people a deterent, to traditional camping. Erecting flimsy tents, lugging cumbersome camping gear and sleeping on rough terrain prevent many individuals from partaking in the outdoor wilderness experience.

So what exactly do you need to bring glamping? While every glamping destination differs, at Whispering Springs Wilderness Retreat our aim has been to simplify the outdoor camping experience. Each luxury tent and cabin is fully outfitted with fine linens, cozy blankets, plush towels and luxurious robes to enhance your stay. However, you may still want to include a few comforts and necessities from home to make the most of your glamping getaway at Whispering Springs Wilderness Retreat.

Hiking boots to explore the nature trails throughout the forest

We have over 4 km of nature trails for you to explore and discover on the property, including an old-growth forest, remnants of a prairie savannah ecosystem and a unique and secluded black locust grove. We suggest bringing hiking boots or running shoes to protect your feet while exploring the forest trails and do not recommend hiking in sandals or flip flops.

Life jacket & fishing rod

Bring a life jacket and take advantage of our water sports and activities, including a peddle boat, paddle board and canoe. Our picturesque spring-fed pond is home to otters, a family of Canadian geese and an array of fish. Feel free to bring your fishing rod and see if you can catch some bass or trout to fry up on the BBQ!

Mosquito repellant & sunscreen

We have done our best to remove the discomforts from the wilderness experience, however we can’t guarantee that you won’t encounter an odd mosquito or two. Each tent has bug netting on all windows and doors, as well as beneath the floorboards. However, we still recommend bringing bug repellant to help keep mosquitoes and horseflies at bay and you’ll want to bring sunscreen to protect yourself on a hot, summers day. We have a selection of mosquito repellant at our camp outpost, ranging from organic options to your traditional hardcore skeeter spray.

Personal care items & toiletries

While each tent is outfitted with organic shampoo and conditioner, we recommend bringing personal care items & toiletries such as toothpaste, tooth brush and facial care items.

A good book you’ve been longing to read

Recline in one of our hammock nooks under the forest canopy and delve into the next book on your reading list. In today’s fast-paced world, finding the time to sit back and get lost in a good book is something that happens all too infrequently.

Warm socks or slippers

Mornings and evenings can be a tad chilly in the forest, so we recommend bringing some warm socks or slippers for your feet.

Food and cooking utensils (if you plan on cooking your own meals)

One of the traditional camping experiences we most wanted to preserve was the outdoor dining experience. Cooking your own meals in the great outdoors, without all of the conveniences and amenities of your home kitchen, is one of the things that makes camping truly unique and memorable. Each safari tent is outfitted with a mini-fridge and BBQ, as well as a personal outdoor dining area. Either choose to bring your own groceries from home, visit one of our local vegetable markets, or let us do the hard work for you and purchase a Cook-Your-Own BBQ Dinner Basket prior to your arrival.

Whether your wedding was cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19 or you are in the very early stages of wedding planning in the midst of the pandemic, you have likely had to adjust the vision of what your dream wedding is going to look like. With large gatherings banned until further notice and many individuals on tighter budgets than they were before the pandemic, together the wedding industry and engaged couples will have to navigate these new waters together. Let’s be honest - hosting a large wedding can be stressful. They generally involve months of planning and organization, followed by last minute changes and revisions. Minimize guest interaction

If it is your hearts desire to have your elderly parents or grandparents attend you nuptials, then a small, intimate wedding may be the safest route to go. Not only will large gatherings likely be off the table for the forseeable future, but the increased person-to-person contact also pose a danger to individuals who are at a high risk of complications relating to COVID-19. With an elopement or intimate wedding you can help minimize this risk, even asking all guests in attendance to socially isolate for the weeks prior to your wedding to help ensure that no one is at risk of spreading COVID-19 to your elderly guests. With a small, intimate wedding you also don’t have to feel guilty about not inviting your mom’s second cousin. Just worry about inviting your very nearest & dearest.

More economical

If you and your partner were laid-off during the pandemic then it is likely that your wedding fund is not quite where you hoped it would be. The average Canadian wedding costs approximately $30,000, an expense that is difficult for many individuals to fathom in today’s financial climate. Our lovingly prepared breakfast baskets will be delivered directly to your tent between 8:30 AM - 9 AM and feature gluten-free homemade granola, Greek yogurt, fresh seasonal yogurt and a scrumptious croissant or fresh muffin baked onsite, milk and juice. Real versus Fake: The Christmas Tree Debate

As households everywhere begin to think about purchasing and decorating their Christmas tree in preparation for the holidays, many families are deciding whether or not they are going to purchase a real Christmas tree or dig up the old fake tree from the basement. While it has been estimated that 60% of families now opt for fake Christmas trees, here is some important information you should consider when deciding which tree will be the centerpiece of your holiday festivities:

Real Christmas Tree

Few scents are more evocative of the holidays than the rich scent of a real Christmas tree. Despite what you may think, real trees are far more environmentally friendly than their fake counterparts – they provide oxygen to the environment, prevent soil erosion and are completely biodegradable (after the Christmas season many trees are used as compost or firewood). Real trees also support local businesses, and can serve as a habitat for indigenous wildlife. So while it is more expensive and time consuming to go out and buy a real Christmas tree every year, it may be the more responsible holiday choice. The ideal and most eco-friendly option is to buy a live tree with the roots intact, and replant the tree once the holidays have passed.

Fake Christmas Tree

Over the past few years many families have been opting for the convenience and simplicity offered by a fake Christmas tree. However, many people are unaware of their hidden dangers. The majority of synthetic Christmas trees are manufactured overseas, most of which are made with PVC, a non-renewable and environmentally offensive chemical that is harmful to the environment. Some fake Christmas trees (especially the older ones) contain lead and other additives that have been linked to liver, kidney, neurological and reproductive damage in animals. So while a synthetic tree may be the easy and economical choice, it may not be the best one for your family and the environment. If you do decide to invest in a fake Christmas tree try to ensure that it is PVC free and take care of it so that it will last for many years to come.

Forest Bathing: The Japanese health phenomenon you need to try

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American now spends 93% of their life indoors. What does this mean for a species who, until very recently in our evolutionary history, were constantly surrounded by the wilderness? Well, over the past few decades, researchers in Japan have been researching and studying the rejuvenating and restorative benefits of simply spending time in the forest. It turns out that reconnecting with the natural world can have a significant positive impact on both your health and wellbeing. Here is what you need to know about forest bathing, the popular Japanese health practice, and how you can try it for yourself.

What is forest bathing (and no, it has nothing to do with taking a bath in the forest)?

Originating in Japan in the 1980’s, forest bathing, also known as shinrin-yoku, is the Japanese practice of taking a relaxed and meditative walk through a forest setting. Recognized as an effective stress management and relaxation practice in Japan, forest bathing has only recently gained notoriety in North America.

What are the health benefits associated with forest bathing?

Japanese researchers have discovered a myriad of health benefits from the simple, unassuming act of walking amongst nature. A few of the positive effects of taking a leisurely stroll under the forest canopy include reduced blood pressure and heart rate, improved immunity, reduced cortisol, and a reduction in stress and anxiety.

How does a walk through the forest improve your health?

An organic compound called phytoncide, emitted by trees, is believed to be partly responsible for the positive health benefits associated with forest bathing.

Phytoncide has been found to have a beneficial effect on human immune function by increasing the count of natural killer cells in the body. Natural killer cells are the superstars of the immune system, helping to fight cancer, ward off illness and prevent infections.

A study conducted in 2010 followed participants on a 3-day forest bathing excursion. They found that participants natural killer cell activity had risen by 50% over the three days spent in the wilderness.

How to go forest bathing

The beauty of forest bathing lies in its easy accessibility and availability. Unlike hiking or nature excursions, forest bathing is not a strenuous or educational activity, but rather therapeutic and meditative. Simply take a leisurely walk through the woods on a gentle path, and immerse yourself in the sight, sounds, and aroma of the forest. Try to release the stress of everyday life and revel in the beauty of the wilderness and your surroundings.

In Japan, you can find certified forest bathing trails that are proven by a blood sampling study to increase natural killer cell count. Guided forest therapy walks are now offered at a few locales throughout the United States and Canada.

According to Amos Clifford, a forest bathing expert, the ideal trail is two-thirds covered with a forest canopy, and is accentuated by creeks, plant diversity and meadow areas.
